Change affects student e-mail addresses

Faculty and Staff:

On Oct. 14, Information Technology Services will discontinue the use of the “wlu.edu”  alias for students. This means that any e-mail to a W&L student in the form of username@wlu.edu will no longer be delivered. Please check your e-mail distribution lists  to ensure that they do not include student entries that end in “@wlu.edu”  (valid student e-mail addresses have the ending “@mail.wlu.edu”). In particular, you should check any personal e-mail distribution lists created prior to 2008, when student e-mail changed from GroupWise, with addresses ending in “@wlu.edu,” to Outlook Live, with addresses ending in “@mail.wlu.edu.”

You do not need to make any changes to course distribution lists in Outlook (such as “ENGL 231_01 FALL 2010-11”) or Sakai, which are automatically updated on a daily basis by ITS.

ITS notified students in May 2009 about the discontinuation of .wlu.edu aliases, which affects only students in the ’09, ’10  ’11 and ’12, and is notifying these students again. Discontinuing the aliases will help reduce the delivery of unwanted and fraudulent e-mail to these students.

Please contact the Information Desk (540-458-4357 or help@wlu.edu) if you have any questions.

Students:

On Oct. 14, Information Technology Services will discontinue the use of the “wlu.edu”  alias for your e-mail account. This change, which affects all students in the classes ’09, ’10, ’11 and ’12,  means that any e-mail sent to you or other affected students in the form of  “username@wlu.edu”  will no longer be delivered.

You may wish to notify your contacts, particularly those who are not currently students or employees at W&L, to be sure to send e-mail to your W&L account using the valid form, “username@mail.wlu.edu.”  The change in the e-mail suffix resulted when ITS changed student accounts from GroupWise to Outlook Live in 2008, but we maintained the use of the “wlu.edu”  alias to allow a smoother transition. Discontinuing the alias will help reduce the delivery of unwanted and fraudulent e-mail to your accounts.

Please contact the Information Desk (540-458-4357 or help@wlu.edu) if you have any questions.
