Thanks for your comment. We appreciate your concern, and we're eager to meet the needs of students, faculty and staff.

The doubling of our connection to the Internet is really just an interim move, as we're presently in competition for a federal grant that could significantly expand our bandwidth and other capabilities. We are evaluating several long-term options for expanding our bandwidth, and will be better prepared to make a decision when we know the outcome (probably in September) of the federal grant process. Also, for what it's worth, please know that being in this area of Virginia leaves us few options for bandwidth vendors, and the best prices for institutional-sized bandwidths are still about 10 TIMES the costs we would pay if our location was, say, near D.C.

The good news is that when it comes to a shared Internet connection, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Yes, the 200 mbps connection is shared by all students, faculty and staff at W&L, but switching and bandwidth-shaping technology help produce a satisfactory experience even when many people are using the network at once. Our current 200 mbps connection puts us about in the middle of 38 peer institutions (members of CLAC, http://www.liberalarts.org) that recently participated in an informal survey on bandwidth.
