Macs and wireless

From time to time, some Macintosh computers have difficulty maintaining wireless connections, particularly when moving from location to location on campus or when “waking up” from power-conservation mode. If you lose the wireless connection on your Mac, these steps will help you to quickly re-establish your connection to the secure wireless network at W&L:

1. Click on the Apple in the top left-hand corner > System Preferences > Network > Airport > click “Turn Airport off”
2. Then, click “Turn Airport On”
Or,

1. Click the wireless icon in the top right-hand corner > “Turn Airport off”
2. Then, click “Turn Airport On”

Student passwords: change required just once a year

Although the W&L network password of each undergraduate student has a specific expiration date between Jan. 31 and March 24, 2011, changing the password re-sets the expiration date to one year from the date of the change. For example, if you choose to change your password on Jan. 30, even though your current expiration date is March 1, you won’t have to change your password again until Jan. 30, 2012.

You’ll receive automated reminders to change your password two weeks before the expiration date. If you choose to change your password before that two-week window (in the example above, for instance, if you change your password on Dec. 30, 2011), then you won’t receive the notifications until two weeks prior to the next required change on Dec. 30, 2012.
