Students: change your passwords

Beginning in January, 2011, Information Technology Services is requiring that all W&L undergraduates change their W&L network password as part of a new security policy requiring password changes once a year. For your convenience, when you  change your W&L network password, your Outlook Live password will automatically change at the same time.

Changing the password is easy and doing it now may prevent inconvenience in late January, when password changes will be enforced for undergraduates. Just follow these steps:

  1. Type in the address of the Information Technology Services home page, its.wlu.edu, and select “Change Password” from the “Quick Links” on the right side of the page. When you complete this process, the new password will be in effect for your  W&L network accounts (used for WebAdvisor, WebRegistration, Sakai and other tools) as well as your Outlook Live e-mail account. Please note: The criteria for passwords have changed recently, so study the requirements carefully on the password-change page before you enter a new password.
  2. After you change your password, you’ll also need to re-configure your wireless device for use on W&L’s secure wireless network. To do that, direct your wireless laptop, phone or other device to this page, and follow the prompts:  https://wireless.wlu.edu
  3. If you receive W&L e-mail on a phone or other portable device, you may also need to re-set the e-mail password on that device.

Contact the Information Desk (540-458-4357 or help@wlu.edu) if you need help with any of these steps. The new password-change policy brings W&L into line with security requirements at most universities, which already require periodic password changes for students. W&L faculty and staff are already required to change their passwords once a year. The new policy affecting students will be implemented incrementally for each class, beginning Jan. 31. Two weeks before your’ password expires, you will begin receiving automated messages asking you to change your password. If you fail to change your password by the deadline, you will be locked out of your account and will have to contact the Information Desk to regain access.

Please beware of phishing messages concerning passwords and other personal information. If you have doubts or concerns about this message or any other, contact the Information Desk (540-458-4357 or help@wlu.edu). See the “Security Alerts” section of the ITS website for examples of fraudulent messages.

Gaines, Gilliam wireless upgraded

The speed of the controllers managing wireless traffic in Gaines and Gilliam residence halls was upgraded during the week of Nov. 22. The change should result in better connection speeds for devices using the wireless network in those spaces.

Please report any problems with wireless service by sending an e-mail to help@wlu.edu, and provide specifics such as the nature of the problem, time of day, location, and the operating system (e.g. Windows 7, Macintosh Snow Leopard) of the wireless device.

Davidson Park wireless is upgraded

Performance problems with wireless service in Davidson Park were addressed by two upgrades the week of Nov. 22:

  • The number of wireless access points in the fraternities was doubled; each house now has two access points. This change should improve the signal quality throughout the houses, and will increase the capability of the network to handle multiple connections.
  • A software upgrade by the vendor to the wireless controllers should address problems with connecting to the secure wireless network, both in the fraternities and campus-wide.

Please report any problems with wireless service by sending an e-mail to help@wlu.edu, and provide specifics such as the nature of the problem, time of day, location, and the operating system (e.g. Windows 7, Macintosh Snow Leopard) of the wireless device.
