W&L doubles Internet connection

Information Technology Services doubled the capacity of W&L’s connection to the Internet on Thursday, July 29. ITS contracted with nTelos, W&L’s Internet Service Provider, for a connection of 200 megabits per second, double the previous 100 megabit-per-second connection.

W&L’s previous connection to the Internet had operated at peak capacity for most of the past year, even during periods when students were on break. ITS uses tools to help manage network traffic and help ensure that critical University functions will not be impaired, but students, faculty and staff nonetheless experienced slow connections with increasing frequency.

The new 200-megabit-per-second connection is 67 times as large as the 3 megabit-per-second Internet connection used by the University in 1999. In 2000, the connection was upgraded to 40 megabits per second, and in 2008, the capacity of the connection was increased to 100 megabits per second.

Please contact the Information Desk (x4357, help@wlu.edu) if you experience any problems with your network connection or have questions.

H drive problems

Some academic users reported this morning (Sept. 2) that no data was visible in their H drive (personal network storage). A re-boot of the computer should solve the problem.
