Windows 7, the new operating system that was officially released recently by Microsoft, is currently supported at a minimal level by Information Technology Services. The operating system will not be installed on W&L-owned production computers until after a period of testing by ITS, which has already identified several incompatibilities between Windows 7 and the University software and network environment.
ITS recognizes, however, that new Windows-based computers purchased for personal use will have Windows 7 pre-installed, and is prepared to provide general support for this platform. The Information Desk will assist students in their use of Windows 7 on privately owned computers, and the level of support will gradually increase as our vendors upgrade their resources to support Windows 7 and as ITS staff and student workers increase their expertise in the new operating system.
ITS research to date indicates that Windows 7 shows great promise as a secure, intuitive operating system. After allowing time for the product to mature and for ITS to complete testing, ITS tentatively plans to begin deploying the Windows 7 operating system on a limited number of W&L-owned computers around spring 2010. ITS will offer training programs prior to any wide-scale deployment on faculty and staff computers.
Those desiring to install Windows 7 on personally owned computers should consult this page, which includes recommendations for licensing, and some of the incompatibilities between Windows 7 and other software in use at the University: http://www.wlu.edu/x36763.xml.
