Sakai to succeed Flashlight as survey tool

ITS is introducing a new tool for surveys, including online course evaluations. The tool will be available within Sakai, providing convenient access through your W&L network user name and password.

The  current Flashlight tool is being discontinued by the vendor in April 2010. Here’s how this will affect current Flashlight users:

  • If you haven’t already done so, please save all your survey data from Flashlight Online to another space, such as your personal network storage (H: drive). Here are instructions for completing that work:

  • If you’d like assistance in saving your data, please contact Jeff Overholtzer by Nov. 1.
  • You may continue using Flashlight Online until the vendor removes access, but no new Flashlight accounts will be created after Jan. 1, 2010.

A workshop on the use of Sakai’s survey tools will be offered during Winter Academy, Dec. 14-16, 2009; see

 for details.

Contact Jeff Overholtzer (joverholtzer orx8440) for additional information on the transition from Flashlight.

Peterson named to NITLE board

Rick Peterson, Chief Technology Officer at Washington and Lee University, has been named to the newly created Advisory Board of the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education. He will serve a two-year term for NITLE, a community-based, non-profit initiative that helps more than 120 participating liberal arts colleges and universities explore and implement digital technologies.

The goal of the 17-member Advisory Board is to provide strategic advice for the organization. Goals for this year include deepening NITLE’s engagement with specific sectors of the liberal arts community and developing strategic partnerships with other organizations, according to W. Joseph King, Executive Director of NITLE. “Members serving on the Advisory Board will have a direct, positive impact on the advancement of liberal education,” he said.
